If you weren’t able to make it to Bristol for Cinema Rediscovered or missed the online events as part of Reframing Film, you can catch up here on some of the sessions!

Some of the most distinctive voices in film curation, distribution, writing and archiving came together to explore the potential of reframing film heritage launching with author, critic and film historian Pamela Hutchinson’s Philip French Memorial Lecture which explored the importance of looking back to understand and explore what’s happening in film culture right now.

The festival’s industry sessions Reframing Film, kicked off with From Idea To Screen, a special edition of the regular Park Circus Webinar series explored the creative and practical steps involved in shaping a repertory programme, providing some practical hints and tips as to how to bring an idea you have to life with guests Rachel Hayward (Home, Manchester), Mark Cosgrove (Watershed / Cinema Rediscovered, Bristol), Julie Pearce (BFI) and Jack Bell (Park Circus.)

Restored & Rediscovered Slate Presentation

Watch Restored & Rediscovered slate presentation hosted by Timon Singh (FAN Campaigns Manager) to get a better sense of what’s coming up, hear more about campaign plans and find out about the context of re-issues and new restorations. This includes presentations from leading distribution and sales companies Park Circus, STUDIOCANAL, Curzon and BFI distribution as well as more specialised outfits such as Twelve Thirty Collective and CPC London.

Whose Cinemas?

Find out about organisations that are bringing attention to lesser-known films and have found interesting ways of engaging audiences, and tracing lineages of familiar experiences and knowledge, through in-person, online events and editorial. Hosted by Reba Martin (Film Hub South West) with contributions from an inspiring line-up including Liz Chege, Director of Africa in Motion (AiM), Arwa Aburawa from Other Cinemas and Jonathan Ali from Twelve30 Collective, who launched a UK wide tour (Aug – Oct) of No Place Like Home at Cinema Rediscovered. Note that this panel is available on catch-up for one week only.

Reframing Film: Collecting Now

Providing insights from BFI National Archive Curators about contemporary film archive collecting; what they collect, why they collect it, and how, Rosie Taylor (BFI National Archive Specialist) talks to the BFI’s Patrick Russell (Senior Curator of Non Fiction), Will Massa (Curator of Contemporary Fiction), Lisa Kerrigan (Senior Curator of Television), and Dylan Cave (Collections Development Manager), to explore the ways in which collecting forms an essential part of the National Collection, the challenges posed by new and emerging media and technology, the hopes for future film and media archiving.

Following its 5th edition in and around Bristol UNESCO City of Film, Cinema Rediscovered launches a UK wide tour of highlights celebrating the return of the big screen experience and a complementary online offer via MUBI (The Harder They Come now showing on MUBI.) The touring programme is available for film exhibitors to book from Aug – Oct 2021, a Watershed project with support from BFI awarding funds from The National Lottery and MUBI and partners Park Circus and Twelve30 Collective.

The tour includes the 4K restoration of Melvin Van Peebles’ little known Nouvelle Vague infused debut feature The Story of a Three-Day Pass, an edgy, romantic film set in Paris of 1967; the 1971: The Year Hollywood Went Independent touring package (a collaboration with Park Circus), five key titles from 1971 giving a glimpse of an independent Hollywood before it was overshadowed by the birth of the franchise, revealing a parallel Hollywood universe of personal, complex, nuanced and countercultural cinema.
