Article: Inclusive Cinema: Celebrate Pride Month this June

June is LGBT Pride Month in the United Kingdom. It commemorates the Stonewall riots and aims to recognize the impact LGBTQ people have had and continue to have across the world.

It’s a month for communities to come together in solidarity to unite, protest and to celebrate the heritage, culture and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex self-defining groups.

Activists and allies can support by:

  • Increasing the visibility of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (“LGBT”) people, their history, lives and their experiences in the curriculum and culture of educational and other institutions, and the wider community;
  • Raising awareness and advancing education on matters affecting the LGBT community;
  • Working to make educational and other institutions safe spaces for all LGBT communities; and
  • Promoting the welfare of LGBT people, by ensuring that the education system recognises and enables LGBT people to achieve their full potential, so they contribute fully to society and lead fulfilled lives, thus benefiting society as a whole.

Pride and Cinema

There is a wealth of films available on the LGBTQI+ experience and history and now is as important as ever to support the work of LGBTQ filmmakers. We have some lists and suggestions to get you started.

In the place of attending a cinema at this time, many exhibitors have run events or activity online. If you are interested in running a film inspired event, here are some resources for information and inspiration from case studies to film guides.

For example, could you:

  • set up a watch party and have a chat on Zoom/Skype after the film?
  • run an online drawing, poetry or drama workshop, using a film as a theme?

Visit Inclusive Cinema for resources on how to get started with running events online.
